Tips for Getting Your Records

📍 Request from every state you've lived in

Criminal records are kept at the state level. If you've lived in multiple states, you may have records in each one. Request from all states where you may have had contact with law enforcement.

🔍 Check both state AND county records

State repositories compile records from counties, but there can be delays. For the most current information, also check the county court where your case was heard.

💡 Look for fee waivers

Many states offer fee waivers for those who can't afford the cost. Check if you qualify based on income, public benefits, or other criteria. The FBI also offers fee waivers for their identity history check.

⚠️ Review for errors

When you receive your records, review them carefully. Look for incorrect dates, wrong charges, cases that should have been dismissed, or records belonging to someone else. You can dispute errors with the repository.
